Hurricane and nor'easter season is part of life in Hampton Roads. Walk your property and fix weak spots before the wind finds them.

Roof checks before the season

From the ground, look for lifted or missing shingles, damaged flashing, and clogged gutters that hold water against the roof edge. Small defects become entry points in wind-driven rain.

Trim branches that hang over the roofline. When limbs come down in a storm, they land on the weakest part of the roof, not the strongest.

Decks and fences: secure what wind can grab

Tighten loose railing posts and boards. On fences, check posts for movement at ground level and repair gate hardware that no longer closes squarely.

Store furniture, planters, and grills when a storm is forecast. Anything that can become a projectile against your fence or deck should be secured or moved inside.
